Spring and summer bring fresh fashion and heavy trends. I feel like I’m constantly trying something new, and what I loved the year before no longer interests me. But there’s something about autumn/winter that feels so nostalgic and natural that my wardrobe remains fairly constant.
Of course, we can attribute this largely to cold-weather investment pieces, like boots and coats, but just as I begin to yearn for my annual Gilmore Girls rewatch, I do the same for my fall wardrobe.
I’ve missed my collection of secondhand jackets and coats that graze down anywhere between my calves or my ankles. Instead of on-trend moto boots and low-slung baggy denim, I’m going stick with my straight-leg Levis or a fresh pair of bootcuts that I can slide a slender heeled boot under. I tried to make both the former work last year and have learned the classic silhouette of the latter is just best for me.
My fashion era of choice will always be the 90s, so some things I am looking to incorporate into my closet this season are tight-fitting, zip-up cardigans. The kind your mom would have had from Liz Claiborne or Ann Taylor. Pashminas or shawls for more formal nights out. And thin scarves. In the hair, around the waist, choked around the neck.
What I’m reading: The Secret History by Donna Tartt
What I’m watching: With October just around the corner, I thought I’d share my go-to spooky movie routine. I’m not a hard-core Horror Girlie™, but I do love a bit of thrill and occult.
I need my horror with a heavy dose of camp, and, like most of my media preferences, there are usually young co-eds in killer outfits involved. When you’re not binging Buffy the Vampire Slayer (duh), consider this list:
Scream - My all time fave movie is a must-watch each year, usually multiple times, and often with people who have never seen it before
Scream 2-6 - There have been two new movies since the last time I managed to watch each installment in a single spooky season, I typically pick one or two others from the franchise to watch. If I had to pick one this year, I’d opt for Scream 3 (Parker Posey, Hollywood, hints at what to expect in Scream 7)
Practical Magic - The center of the Venn Diagram where rom-com and Halloween meets. This is another I’m likely to watch more than once
Sorority Row - Audrina Patridge is literally in this movie. Audrina Patridge. But, really, this movie has a lot of good kills and is just generally fun to watch and should not be confused with The Row, a movie starring Lala Kent that I promise I have not seen
The Witches of Eastwick - Cher…Susan Sarandon…Michelle Pfeiffer… I love this movie
The Covenant (2006) - ok, admittedly, I only just saw this for the first time, but with a cast full of HOT BOYS (Nate Archibald, Sebastian Stan, Tim Riggins, and the fire guy from Sky High), scratch that, HOT BOY WITCHES, it will be added to my yearly rotation
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed - the superior Scooby-Doo live-action remake
Ginger Snaps or The Craft - I’ve seen both so many times over the last decade that I tend to pick one or the other to watch each year. If you haven’t seen either - start with The Craft!
It Follows - this is honestly the one true horror movie I watch each year, and it’s probably because of the shell phone
Scream Queens (series) - Season 1 only. I know the cast is made up of complete menaces, but it’s soooo good, I can’t help it
Jennifer’s Body - no explanation needed
Honorable mentions: House of Wax (2005), Charmed (series), & Final Destination
New on my list to watch: Devil in the Flesh, The Faculty, Cursed, & Urban Legend
What I’m listening to: My fall playlist, obvi:
And that’s all for now! I wanna hear from you: what are you looking forward to wearing this fall? What should I add to my Halloween movie list? What do you want to see in the next letter (costumes, anyone)??
this suspiciously looks like my fall watch list lol
it's purely coincidental that i have two holiday themed recs but the 2006 Black Christmas remake has Sorority Row vibes and Valentine (starring Angel from Buffy) is from the same director as Urban Legend (which is one of my favorites for this time of year ❤️). both have iconic ensemble casts, so very Scream coded. also if you're a secret history head, I recommend Special Topics in Calamity Physics!
HOT BOY WITCHES
Wish I had a shell phone :/
I would rec Drag Me to Hell it has scream queen legend Justin Long and its a campy good time
